Levi Jones-Leary is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Murilo Santana, & is widely regarded as one of the top contenders of his generation. He is the current International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation World Champion (2018 brown).
Born on March 13, 1997 in Bondi, Sydney – Australia, Levi was competitive from a young age, participating in athletics, soccer and also surfing on Sydney’s Eastern Beaches.
By the age of 14, he had become disillusioned with school life, and it was around this time that a social program called “Links to Learning” introduced Jones-Leary to mixed martial arts (MMA). Links to Learning was a project designed to help kids at risk of abandoning the Australian education system by providing a series of activities, taking students out of school once a week to introduce them to a variety of self-expressing platforms. Despite not being particularly confrontational as a youth, MMA was immediately appealing to a young Jones-Leary.
From MMA Levi quickly shifted to Jiu Jitsu. Instantly he understood BJJ was where he wanted to take his life and began pursuing it as a career.
In order to become a world class competitor, Levi began working extremely hard at his craft and started travelling to the United States at around the age of 17 prior to big tournaments. To prepare for these events he trained at the Ruben Charles academy in LA. This was until 2015 when the Unity Jiu Jitsu academy opened its doors in New York.
Being a tremendous fan of Paulo and João Miyao, as well as Murilo Santana – all members of Unity, Jones-Leary dreamt about honing his skills alongside this trio. To accomplish this goal, he found a job at an Australian furniture delivery company, working and saving, all whilst still training for hours a day in a period of his life that he describes as being extremely challenging. Once at Unity, Levi’s work ethic, personal goals and values helped build the foundations of a great friendship he now shares with head coach Murilo Santana
After several years competing under the Unity JJ flag, Levi Jones-Leary recently (June 2018) earned his black belt from the hands of Murilo Santana after an outstanding competitive year at brown belt, winning Europeans Championship, Pan American & World Championship, being the first Australian to do so.Levi describes this as a special, full circle moment surrounded by some his Jiu Jitsu heroes – The culmination of years of dedication.
Currently splitting his time between Australia and the U.S., Levi’s single-minded focus is a IBJJF Black Belt World Title in 2019, to prove beyond doubt he is the very best in the world.
