Axle Whitehead

Born in Melbourne on 16 December 1980, Axle grew up on his family’s farm in country Victoria where his dad worked as a farmer. While his father was working in the fields his mother would drag Axle and his two older brothers out to live music shows. When at home, there was always music playing music and the sounds of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon or Creedence Clearwater were never far away.

Axle eventually moved to Melbourne to attend the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts to study music. In 2003, he was a contestant on the first series of Australian Idol reaching the final 20. Axle then hosted Video Hits on Network Ten from 2004 – 2006, which saw him travel the world and interview the likes of Justin Timberlake , Oasis and Duran Duran. Video Hits became the highest rating music show on Australian TV.

In 2006 Axle returned to work on the family farm which allowed him to focus on his passion for making music. At the beginning of 2007 he moved to Sydney to launch his recording career and signed deals with Roadshow Music and SonyATV Publishing.

His debut single ‘I Don’t Do Surprises’ came in at No.1 on the iTunes music and video charts and his album, ‘Losing Sleep’ debuted in the Top 10 on the Aria chart in August 2008.

In 2008 Axle also became the ‘face’ of MARCS clothing fronting a six month national campaign featuring on everything from point of sale to billboards.

In 2009 Axle joined the cast of Home and Away as rocker Liam Murphy who creates some waves in Summer Bay. Axle’s character on Home & Away debuted on air March 5th. On acting, Axle says, “I’ve been taking classes for the last 18 months and it’s wonderful to be able to put it into practice. Home and Away has been very supportive, the pace of the show is very challenging and it’s been a fantastic opportunity for me to further my skills.” Liam returned to become a full-time character that year.

Also in 2009 Axle continued to go from strength to strength winning the prestigious ‘Cleo Bachelor of the Year’ Award and began hosting Channel 7’s prime-time hit show “Worlds Strictest Parents”.

Throughout 2010 to 2013, Axle has continued on the cast of Home and Away as well as writing for a new album and releasing latest single “Sister Sunshine” which was written with LA producer and songwriter Dave Bassett. The single was chosen to be used in the promotions of Channel 7’s “Winners & Losers” in 2011.

2014 saw Axle land a role in season 5 of the critically acclaimed series of Shameless alongside William H. Macy. The series was released in Australian in 2015, around the same time as Axle become the face of William Hill’s new betting campaign.

In 2016 he played James Slade / Hellfire, a recurring role in ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 and 4, and in September 2017 has been confirmed as the host of Seven’s new show, The Wall. A fast, family-friendly game show that offers ordinary two-person teams the opportunity to win extraordinary money by conquering a towering four storey wall.

Currently residing in Los Angeles, Axle frequently travels back to Australia. He is an experienced MC and has hosted numerous events ranging from World Aids Day and Make Poverty History to openings for Myer and Australian Fashion Week as well as MC-ing Jennifer Hawkins’ launch of her swimwear brand Cozi.
